Chapter 10

Regardless of how fast we were going, it always seemed to take ages to get to our chosen destination. I knew that Tracey and Stephen wouldn’t let Charlie out of their sight until we got there, but at the same time, I didn’t know what Charlie was capable of and whether or not he’d put up a fight. After all, he had probably burnt down a house with a family inside just for the money. That didn’t sound like someone who would go meekly to the police station.

I briefly wondered whether or not to phone in for backup, but I trusted my team’s judgement, and if Tracey or Stephen felt like that was necessary, then they would have phoned it in already.

I gripped the steering wheel tightly as we sped in between the lanes of traffic. The first time I drove on blue lights, after I’d passed the test, felt like I’d learned to drive all over again. It had been stressful, as I’d swept along the streets while keeping an eye out for pedestrians and slow moving cars. But now that I’d been doing it for over ten years, it felt like second nature to me, and I barrelled towards the scene while I tried to work out what had happened at the Robertsons’ home.

The winding road down to North Berwick was almost deserted after the bad weather. The humidity in the air had started to increase again, and the haar, the Scottish sea fog, was starting to descend over the top of Berwick Law, the imposing hill and rock face that towered over the seaside town.

We passed the sign welcoming us to North Berwick, declaring it a Fairtrade Town, as well as Britain in Bloom winners, while urging us to drive carefully. I suspected that had something to do with flowers, but before I could ask Emma, she spoke first.

“They’re parked outside Charlie’s house,” Emma said as we entered North Berwick.

“Noted,” I replied.

The fact that they’d managed to get him back to his house was a good sign, and hopefully that meant that he hadn’t put up a fight. I suppose it didn’t mean we were going to get any answers from him, but as long as he didn’t try any funny business, then I’d happily take the opportunity to talk.

Charlie MacArthur lived in a small cottage opposite a large, grassy field with the sea in the far distance. No other houses surrounded his which made it a beautiful and serene place to live, especially with the white, icy tips of the trees and grass. I’m sure I would have appreciated my surroundings more if we didn’t have a man to interrogate.

As we pulled up alongside the police car, I spotted Tracey and Stephen standing on the front porch of the cottage. They were facing Charlie, who had taken a seat on a bench. Emma and I cleared the car in record time and sprinted towards the porch. I was definitely getting my workout in today, at least.
